L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science awards Judith Birkenfeld along with 4 other researchers
2021-02-08
The investigations will receive an endowment of 15,000 euros each to continue contributing to the future of renewable energies, the knowledge of the universe and the Earth or the early detection of diseases. The program, present in Spain for 21 years, has recognized 72 researchers and has given grants of 1.2 million euros. It also launches the #QueremosCiencia campaign to claim its role in society, more important than ever to guarantee a sustainable reconstruction after COVID-19. "For Women In Science" has been present in Spain for 21 years, since the first international prize was awarded to Margarita Salas. Since then, she has recognized 72 researchers in our country and has awarded grants worth a total of 1.2 million euros. An initiative with a long history that this year is celebrated in a context marked by the health and economic crisis of COVID-19, where the development of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) has proven to be more necessary than ever, no only to fight the virus, but to ensure sustainable economic reconstruction. This year the program also launches the #QueremosCiencia campaign to make the need for these disciplines visible in the digital environment.

Multifocal Acceptance Score to Evaluate Vision
2021-01-29
We present a comprehensive but clinically feasible metric (Multifocal Acceptance Score to Evaluate Vision, MAS-2EV) to assess vision with presbyopia corrections. The MAS-2EV is based on a set of images representing natural visual scenes in day and night conditions projected on screens from far and near, and stereopsis images at near. In this study, subjects viewed and scored images with different binocular corrections (distance monofocal corrections; bifocal corrections; monovision and modified monovision) administered with soft contact lenses (in young cycloplegic subjects) or with a binocular simultaneous vision simulator, the SimVis Gekko. We have found that MAS-2EV has sufficient repeatability and sensitivity to allow differentiation between corrections with only three repetitions. The MAS-2EV, especially in combination with visual simulators, can be applied to select prospective corrections of presbyopia in patients prior to contact lens fitting or intraocular lens implantation.

Vision is protected against blue defocus
2021-01-22
Using Adaptive Optics, we investigated the optical and visual effects of correcting monochrome aberrations when viewing polychromatic images in gray, green, and blue scale. Correcting monochromatic aberrations of the eye improves the optical quality of focused green images, but (confirming our previous publication in Nature 2002) degrades the optical quality of out-of-focus blue images, particularly in eyes with higher amounts of monochrome aberrations. The perceptual judgments of image quality correlated the optical findings, but the perceptual impact of correcting monochromatic aberrations was less than the optical predictions. Interestingly, the same chromatic blur in green images decreased the perceived image quality significantly more than the native chromatic blur in blue images. The visual system then seems to adapt to the blur produced by native monochrome aberrations, as well as to blur in blue.
