Instituto de Óptica “Daza de Valdés”
Scientific culture service
The service belongs to the CSIC’s network of scientific culture and citizen science.

Members of the service:

  • Javier Renau López
  • José Maluenda Hueva

The scientific culture service of the Institute of Optics was formed in 2018 with the task of helping technical and research staff in the tasks of communication and dissemination of science.

This page lists the main services offered to make them known to staff.

Design of infographics, illustrations and other digital or printed graphic material

Design and production of promotional materials such as posters, programs, leaflets, etc. for the implementation of activities.

Currently, we also have the infographic José Maluenda who is creating illustrations and infographics to present in projects, magazine articles, press releases, etc.

Design, creation and maintenance of websites related to the IO-CSIC

These websites may be websites of research groups, websites of scientific projects, personal websites, websites of conferences in which someone from the institute participates or websites for scientific dissemination such as the María Teresa Vigón Photographic Collection.

Preparation of press releases for scientific articles

The service attempts to produce a press release for each article published in the Institute’s Scopus, but in order to also be eligible to publish the press release on the CSIC website, the CSIC central communications service must be notified before the article is published.

Organization of various scientific dissemination events

The IO’s scientific culture unit participates to a greater or lesser extent in most of the scientific outreach initiatives carried out at the institute. Currently the most important initiatives are:

  • Organization, publicity and search for candidates for the Photon Awards organized each year by the Institute of Optics.
  • Introduction to Research in Optics and Photonics course, which in 2025 will be in its 34th edition.
  • Technical assistance in the organization of conferences. We have experience in helping to organize different parts of conferences, such as the preparation and distribution of graphic material for the conference, the creation and maintenance of websites, resolution of incidents, management of spaces, catering, etc.
  • Coordination of the Curie Colloquia, management of room reservations, posters, organization of travel, publicity, presentation of the conference and everything that is necessary for each conference. The colloquia usually hold 5 conferences per year.
  • Support and implementation of dissemination workshops. On the occasion of international days such as the Day of the Girl and the Woman in Science or similar, we accompany the scientific staff to give talks to students of different ages. We also collaborate with other CSIC institutes to give joint talks.
  • Coordination of the activities of the Science Week. This involves acting as an interface between the people interested in offering some activity of the institute and the scientific culture of the CSIC, the coordination of the spaces to be shared between the institutes of the center and the communication with the public that will attend the activities.
Management and maintenance of IO-CSIC social networks

The Institute of Optics is more or less active on Linkedin, Bluesky, X, Instagram, Pinterest and Youtube

Management of job offers in Euroaxess and LinkedIn

The institute has already created a user in EuroAxess to centralize the job offers that are announced there, as well as the possibility of announcing an offer on the Linkedin job search portal.

Maintenance of the IO-CSIC intranet

Some repetitive administrative tasks have been automated on the institute’s intranet, such as preparing reports for different calls for proposals or cross-referencing data from different sources for the scientific report.

It is also used as an internal information channel for the institute, such as the periodic publication of department reports or other information of interest to staff.

These developments were carried out at the request of the institute’s management or research staff.

Preparation of the IO-CSIC scientific report

Each year the scientific report of the institute is produced in a collaborative document so that it can be accessed and edited by several people.

Record of activities in consciousness

Record of activities in the conscience of scientific personnel.

3D printing of parts

We have a Creality Ender 3 S1 printer in our office and we can print parts sent to us in stl or obj format or ask us to find them for you. We also have 3D editing programs such as Adobe Meshmixer or Blender but we are still learning how to create new parts with ease.

Coordination of the 4th ESO + business program

In the 4th ESO + Business program, research groups can offer places to 4th ESO students to come for a few days to learn about the work environment of different professions.

The stays take place at the beginning of spring.
