The winners of the Fotón 2021 Awards have been published
The Daza de Valdés Optical Institute of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) has announced the winners of the Fotón 2021 Awards . In this edition they have been deserving of the first prizes in the categories of Photon emitted and Photon absorbed, respectively, an divulgative video on fiber optic sensors, prepared by scientists from the Public University of Navarra, and an activity that brings the scientific method closer to secondary school students through the measurement of small structures with light.

The Fotón Awards, promoted by the CSIC Institute of Optics in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Optics (SEDOPTICA) and the Southern European Cluster in Photonics and Optics (SECPhO), aim to recognize the work of communication, dissemination and approach to the public opinion of the scientific, technological and social impact of research in optics and photonics. They also aim to promote and encourage the teaching of science and research, in particular optics and photonics, to primary and secondary school students.

Photon emitted

The authors of the work awarded the first prize in the Photon emitted category are Rosa Ana Pérez Herrera, Santiago Tainta Ausejo and Mikel Bravo Acha , from the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering of the Public University of Navarra for his work Measuring with light. This video was part of the activities developed within the framework of the Virtual Science Fair of the Public University of Navarra and broadcast in November 2020 as part of the European Night of Researchers. The jury has valued the informative quality of this audiovisual work. Specifically, he highlighted that "it transfers sensor technologies in smart cities in an entertaining and scientific rigor", has valued the aesthetic qualities and the exhibition form, and has highlighted "its ability to reach a wide audience through the La Noche de los Investigadores initiative ”.

The second prize in this category has been awarded to Antonio Marzoa Domínguez , research and development engineer at SENER Aeroespacial, for four informative articles on optical aberrations and diffraction of interest to amateur astronomers, published between September and December 2020 in Astronomy magazine. The jury highlights of this work "its great rigor, halfway between specialized publication and general dissemination, its careful presentation and the fact that it is accessible to a very broad community of readers."

The jury for the Photon emitted category was made up of researchers from the CSIC Optical Institute Sergio Barbero, Gabriel Cristóbal, Juan Ignacio Larruquert, Joaquín Campos, José Olivares, Rosalía Serna and Alejandro Manjavacas, as well as Abel Grau and Alda Ólafsson, chief and editor of the Communication Department of the CSIC, respectively.

Photon absorbed

In the category Absorbed photon, whose objective is to promote and encourage the teaching of science and research and, in particular, optics and photonics to primary and secondary students, the activity Measuring with light, has unanimously won the award. Presented by professor Rosa Salvador Tena, from IES Penyagolosa de Castellón .

The jury has highlighted that “this unique project, aimed at 2nd year high school students, brings students closer to the scientific career and to the scientific method itself using the measurement of small structures with light as a common thread, which is an intrinsic issue in optics. and photonics”. "The project includes the realization of a great variety of training practices with rigor, with which it is possible to involve the students and which also incorporates the communication of the results obtained," she added.

The jury for this category has been made up of Pilar Tigeras Sánchez, deputy vice president of Scientific Culture of the CSIC, researchers from the CSIC Optics Institute Rosalía Serna, Sergio Barbero, Joaquín Campos, Gabriel Cristóbal, Juan Ignacio Larruquert, José Olivares and Alejandro Manjavacas , as well as Pablo Nacenta, professor at the IES Alameda de Osuna, in Madrid.
