Participation of the IO-CSIC in the second edition of the 2022 Talent and Technology Awards

On October 1, the Talent and Technology Awards were presented with which the Madrid City Council, with the support of the Madrid Science Park Foundation, awards the best doctoral theses and master’s thesis in matters of technological innovation, presented at universities with headquarters in the Community of Madrid.

In this second edition, to which 428 applications have been submitted, the total amount of the prizes has reached 100,000 euros, thus being one of the most important calls in this area. For the doctoral theses, 3 prizes of 12,000 euros each and 10 second prizes of 4,000 euros have been awarded. For the master’s thesis there have been 3 prizes of 3,000 euros each and 10 second prizes of 1,500 euros. The jury was made up of prominent personalities from the academic, scientific and technological world, together with representatives of the Madrid City Council.

The awards have three main categories: ethical and legal aspects in the field of technology, research and technological development, and best business projection, and 10 second prizes in the following categories:

  • To the best work aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
  • To the best work in the field of cybersecurity.
  • To the best work applied to fintech.
  • To the best work in biomedicine or biotechnology.
  • To the best work in aerospace.
  • To the best work on waste (circular economy).
  • To the best work on new mobility (new types of vehicles, drones, alternative engines, fuel cells…).
  • To the best work on the application of technological tools such as artificial intelligence or blockchain.
  • To the best work with urban impact.
  • To the best work with impact for the welfare or benefit of the citizen.

These awards are an incentive for researchers and postgraduate students from Madrid universities, and an attraction for companies and investors who want to incorporate advanced services based on this research and work.

This year the Institute of Optics has two researchers and one researcher among the winners:

 

-Raquel Fernández de Cabo: She has obtained the Second Prize for the best master’s thesis in the application of technological tools. The TFM was carried out in the group of Non-Linear and Nanoscale Guided Optics (N2GO) and defended at the Complutense University of Madrid. The directors of this master’s thesis entitled “High performance photonic power splitter based on subwavelength metamaterials” were Aitor Villafranca Velasco and David González Andrade.

 

-David González Andrade: He has won the second prize for the best doctoral thesis in the application of technological tools. The doctoral thesis was carried out in the group of Non-Linear and Nanoscale Guided Optics (N2GO) and defended at the Complutense University of Madrid. The directors of this thesis entitled “Sub-wavelength metamaterials for high-performance photonic microdevices” were Aitor Villafranca Velasco and Pedro Corredera Guillén.

Xoana Barcala Gosende: Award for the doctoral thesis with the best business projection. The doctoral thesis was carried out in the Visual Optics and Biophotonics group and in 2Eyes Vision S. L. (spin-off of the CSIC). The directors of this thesis entitled “Binocular Simultaneous Vision Visual Simulator: validation and implementation of Sim+Vis technology in the clinic” were Carlos Dorronsoro Díaz and Susana Marcos Celestino.

The winners thank the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Community of Madrid and the CSIC for the funding received thanks to which these works could be carried out
