Susana Marcos receives the Edwin H. Land Medal
Madrid / April 12, 2023
Susana Marcos, a leading researcher in the field of visual optics and ocular imaging, has been awarded the prestigious Edwin H. Land Medal for outstanding contributions to the field.
Marcos is the David R. Williams Director of the University of Rochester Center for Visual Sciences and Associated Researcher at the CSIC Institute of Optics and member of the VioBio group, from where she studies to understand the interaction of properties structural, biomechanical and optical aspects of the eye.

Susana Marcos’ work has focused on developing new techniques for evaluating the eye, with the aim of improving our understanding of retinal image quality and the limits imposed by optics on visual functions and perception. She has made significant contributions to the study of myopia, presbyopia, cataracts, and corneal correction, and her research has paved the way for new treatments and diagnostic tools for a wide variety of eye disorders.
One of her most notable achievements within her VioBio team is the development of SimVis technology, which allows patients to “try on” multifocal lenses that will replace the crystalline lens before undergoing intraocular lens implantation. This technology has revolutionized the way patients and physicians approach the treatment of eye disorders, providing more precise and personalized results.
In addition to her research she is also a highly successful trainer and mentor, having trained numerous students and postdoctoral fellows throughout her career in the field of optics and photonics.
Susana Marcos is the author or co-author of more than 200 articles in leading scientific journals and has 23 patents (14 licensed to industry).
The Edwin H. Land Medal was established in 1992 to recognize pioneering work in inventions, technologies, and products empowered by scientific research. It is an award given jointly by Optica (formerly OSA) and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), and is funded with support from the Polaroid Foundation, the Polaroid Retirees Association, and other individual contributors, including Manfred Heiting, Theodore Voss, and John J. McCann.
Susana Marcos’s receipt of this award is a testament to her remarkable achievements in the field of visual optics and ocular imaging, as well as her dedication to improving human health through scientific research.
Her work has had a significant impact on the ophthalmic industry, and her contributions will undoubtedly continue to shape the field for years to come.
