Banner International Day of Women and Girls in Science 11F / CSIC

This year, the institute will offer the following activities:

– Next Monday, February 5 will start, one more year, the activity “Dare to be a Scientist”, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2024 on February 11.

This activity has been carried out since 2018 and is organized by our colleague Mar Fernández Gutiérrez together with five other CSIC scientists (Aixa Morales from IC-CSIC, Aurora Nogales and Sagrario Martínez from IEM-CSIC, Marta I. Hernández from IFF-CSIC and Irene Gómez from IQFBC-CSIC). In it, the researchers will give lectures aimed at girls and boys between 14 and 16 years old, presenting biographies of great female scientific researchers in history and also reporting the results of a survey on the references and academic interests of boys and girls.

The objective is to make visible the work of women scientists, their difficulties and challenges, as well as to awaken scientific vocations in girls and boys to study and work in the field of STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

This year nine centers will be visited: IES Palomeras-Vallecas, IES Emilio Castelar, IES Cervantes, IES Dámaso Alonso, Liceo Madariaga, Biblioteca Pública José Hierro (Madrid), IES Dionisio Aguado (Fuenlabrada), IES Vicente Aleixandre (Pinto) and IES Francisca de Pedraza (Alcalá de Henares). – On February 9, the Laser Processing Group will conduct a workshop consisting of a talk with practical experiments entitled “Nosotras somos Científicas” (We are scientists).

It will be given at IES Blas de Otero to students in 2nd ESO by Rosalía Serna, Marina García-Pardo, Eva Nieto-Piñero and Fernando Chacón-Sanchez.

– Raquel Fernández de Cabo and María Viñas Peña have spearheaded an initiative that consists of creating a set of information cards with photos and brief summaries of women researchers plus technical support and management personnel.

These cards will be used in talks to schools and institutes so that students have close and inspiring female references.

– Finally, María Viñas, Raquel de Cabo and Gabriel Cristóbal have prepared a talk entitled “Rosalind Franklin, Optics and Photography 51. A history of 11F”.

On the occasion of 11F, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, they will visit the Ramiro de Maeztu School (3rd and 4th grade) to talk about the scientist who obtained the first photograph of DNA, the basis of life, Rosalind Franklin.

A formidable researcher who faced many difficulties. In the talk they will talk about science, optics, X-rays, and play with lasers, to understand the optics behind the famous Photograph 51.
