On November 20, researcher Eduardo Martínez was interviewed on the Cadena SER program “Hora 25” to talk about his research on the human lens, the improvements developed when measuring its shape and the application of these improvements. to more precisely select the intraocular lens to be implanted in a cataract operation.
These investigations have allowed him to access a Leonardo Scholarship from the BBVA Foundation, scholarships that are intended to support the work of researchers and cultural creators who, being in intermediate stages of their career, are characterized by a highly innovative scientific, technological or cultural career. .

When a person has cataracts, their lens becomes opaque and the solution we have is to extract it and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens. This operation can also be done to correct presbyopia in which the lens is a multifocal lens like that of progressive glasses.

To choose the best intraocular lens for each person, currently in the clinic the geometry of the cornea and the length of the patient’s eye are measured and with this the lens to be implanted is decided. However, this procedure fails in people who have previously had vision surgery to correct their prescription or who have atypical eyes. In this project, lens measurements not available until now and artificial intelligence algorithms will be used to improve intraocular lens selection.
