Our colleague Aitor Villafranca from the N2GO group at the Institute of Optics and Rosario Porras Aguilar, associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, have been awarded the Diversity and Inclusion Recognition granted by OPTICA since 2018.

This recognition serves to honor achievements within the optics research community that foster greater appreciation, advancement, and celebration of diversity and inclusion. Recognized activities may include community service, professional growth, inclusive hiring practices, or programs that foster understanding and inclusion among people of diverse cultural, social, and experiential backgrounds.

Aitor Villafranca has been selected for his tireless work in raising awareness about the LGBTQIA+ community, offering mentorship, influencing policy changes, and advocating for inclusive and equitable practices in research and industry.

Rosario Porras is known for her pioneering research into more affordable and accessible imaging techniques for underserved communities and her impactful outreach and mentoring programs targeting underrepresented communities in STEM.
