Our colleague Sergio Barbero participates in the opening of the exhibition on Piedad de la Cierva

The University of Navarra opens today, November 19, the exhibition “Piedad de la Cierva: pioneer, visionary and scientist”, a tribute to the life and work of this researcher, who was a key figure in the industrialization of optical glass and in the research of artificial radiation.
Piedad de la Cierva developed part of her career at the CSIC Institute of Optics, where she contributed to the advancement of science in Spain in a historical context that offered few opportunities for women in the academic field.
The exhibition, which can be visited at the Central Library of the University of Navarra until March 14, 2025, will review his main achievements, such as his research in X-rays, optical glass and refractory bricks for the Spanish Navy. The exhibition will also recreate his work environment in the mid-20th century with historical materials and objects that were part of his scientific activity.

Round table “Women who inspire”
At the opening ceremony, which took place at 12 noon in the lobby of the Central Library of the University of Navarra, the round table “Women who inspire” will be held, in which our colleague Sergio Barbero will participate. Together with him, they will debate the legacy of women scientists such as Piedad de la Cierva, Inmaculada Alva, researcher at the Josemaría Escrivá Study Centre (CEJE), Gurutze Pérez, director of the Women, Science and Technology Chair at the Public University of Navarra, and Ana Rouzaut, professor of Biochemistry and Genetics at the University of Navarra.
Sergio Barbero will provide the perspective of Piedad’s time at the CSIC and where she left a significant mark on research into optical glass. His participation will highlight the continuity of the legacy of this pioneer in the field of science.
Promoting science among the new generations
The exhibition will include an educational programme with school visits, the aim of which is to awaken interest in scientific vocations, especially among girls and teenagers. After its visit to Pamplona, the exhibition will travel to Madrid, expanding its scope and visibility.
