The Instituto de Óptica of the CSIC announces its Fotón 2019 awards

The Instituto de Óptica "Daza de Valdés" of the Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) has announced the winners of its Fotón 2019 awards, an initiative that this institute promotes in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Optics and with SECPhO (Southern European Cluster in Photonics and Optics).

In the Fotón Emitido category, the members of the jury unanimously agreed to award the first prize to Laura Chaparro, for her work entitled "La nueva era de los materiales invisibles", and the second prize to Susana Eva Martínez, for her script of the work of scientific theater "Grabado en la retina". In the Fotón Absorbido category, the activity "Engañando a la Vista", from IES Diego Velázquez de Torrelodones (Madrid), presented by professors Pablo Cassinello, Cristina Somolinos, Ana Camarero y Diego Valdes, has also been unanimously awarded, and an accésit has been awarded to the Escape Room activity "El legado de Galileo. Características de la luz", from the Cristo Rey de Zaragoza School, presented by Juan Torre Sáez De Guinoa, Encarnita Ramos, María José Lahoz and Nerea Lasheras.

On the one hand, the Fotón awards aim to recognize the work of communication, dissemination and approach to public opinion on the scientific, technological and social impact of research in optics and photonics and, secondly, to promote and encourage the teaching of science and research and, in particular, optics and photonics to primary and secondary school students.
"For the Instituto de Óptica, these awards represent the opportunity to reward the extraordinary effort made by the disseminators and teachers when it comes to bringing scientific research closer to society, promoting new vocations and reflecting the enormous importance of optics and photonics as enabling tools for the development of humanity, "said the director of the institute of the CSIC, Juan Diego Ania-Castañón.

"Fotón Emitido"

The jury of the Fotón Emitido category, which awards scientific dissemination in the area of optics and photonics, this year has selected a journalistic work and a play. In the case of "La nueva era de los materiales invisibles", an article written by Laura Chaparro and published in April 2018 in the "Muy Interesante" dissemination magazine (print edition), the jury underlines "the scope and completeness of the report, which includes numerous sources of information, and that being written in a very attractive, invites from the beginning to continue reading. He also highlighted "the visual resources and the good layout, which facilitate that the content reaches the reader in a pleasant and clear way" and the fact of being published in "a magazine of great distribution that motivates the reader to continue delving into the metamaterials and in its optical properties. "

Regarding the script of the scientific theater play "Grabado en la retina", written by Susana Eva Martínez, of the Institute of Science and Theater (INCiTe), and dramatized on February 28, 2019 in the Auditorium of the IMO Foundation (Barcelona), jury values "the originality of the proposal", and the fact that "it constitutes a new channel of transmission of knowledge that, merging scientific, artistic and humanistic disciplines, allows to disseminate science, making it accessible and comprehensible to society".
The jury, chaired by Pilar Tigeras, Vice President of Scientific Culture of the CSIC, was composed of researchers from the Sergio Barbero Instituto de Óptica, Gabriel Cristóbal, Juan Ignacio Larruquert, José Olivares, Alicia Pons, José Luis de Miguel and Rosalía Serna, as well as by María González and Alda Ólafsson, editors of the Communication Department of the CSIC.

"Fotón Absorbido"

The jury of the "Fotón Absorbido" category, whose objective is to promote and encourage the teaching of science and research and, in particular, optics and photonics to elementary and secondary students, has selected the activity "Engañando a la Vista" , presented by the IES Diego Velázquez, Torrelodones (Madrid), emphasizing that "it is an educational project easy to reproduce and scale and, therefore, with a high potential of translation to other educational centers or areas." In addition, it "encourages a high level of participation in students, who are encouraged to investigate on their own, allowing not only learning by doing, but actively participate in the communication of science."

Given the high quality of the candidatures, the jury has decided to award this year an honorable mention to the activity "Escape Room El legado de Galileo. Características de la luz", of the Cristo Rey de Zaragoza School. In it, the jury has especially valued "its great originality, which encourages research work by presenting a series of challenges that involve students" and the fact that "it brings science and research closer to young people, given that it is an activity aimed at primary students

The jury, chaired by Marina Villegas, advisory member of the CSIC Presidency, was composed of researchers from the Instituto de Óptica Sergio Barbero, Gabriel Cristóbal, Juan Ignacio Larruquert, José Olivares, Alicia Pons, José Luis de Miguel and Rosalía Serna, as well as Pablo Nacenta, professor of the IES "Alameda de Osuna", and Sara Aissati, president of the Student Association of the Instituto de Óptica.
